Great Wall of Ramsgate defaced following protest graffiti

No idea why that shabby hoarding hiding the ugly dump that is the notorious 'Royal Sands' development site is referred to as a wall, as it clearly isn't.  Nor is it great.  It's a decaying eyesore, pretty much like the rest of Ramsgate and the rest of Thanet, a place with a council rotten to the core, whose long term widespread corruption and incompetence has led to such abominations as the Pleasurama site being the bloody state it is.

The idea behind the 'Great Wall' was OK.  The ugly hoarding was there, so let's brighten the seafront up by putting paintings on it.  Fine.  The main problem is, the sea is a few yards away and paintings are not known for their resilience to howling gale force winds, sea air and frequent sand blasting.  With a result that many of the paintings are rotting, peeling, coming apart and adding to the air of neglect and decay that hangs over Ramsgate.

So as far as I'm concerned, whoever daubed white paint over a large number of the art works has probably done everyone a favour as now the aging pictures can be replaced with new ones.  Really, the maximum stay of any bit of art should be about a year.  The finish will certainly have deteriorated markedly after a 12 months of British weather.  The other possibility would be to place perspex in front of each painting, to protect it from the elements - and vandalism.  But I prefer the regular rotation method - and regular it will be because nothing is ever likely to be built on that land this side of the 22nd century.

The hysteria over the defacement of these worthy but by now mostly tired and tattered paintings from some quarters is clearly politically motivated.  Not only is Thanet council rotten to the core, it's also home to some of the most childish local politicians in the country (I believe they even made the national news, such is their hilarious pettiness).

The piece of protest graffiti I like.  It tells it like it is.  I can understand why Ian Drivel supported it (he should be required to change his name by deed poll now, having been rechristened by a typo on this blog: http://thanetonline.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/great-wall-of-ramsgate-vandalism.html).  Clearly anyone who seriously thought he was urging people to deface this site or any other is a clueless moron, or more likely some tit scoring a few political points.

  1. With you 100% on this. A lot of hysterical moaning from people who would seem to prefer leaving a building site hoarding in place rather than address the real issue of sorting out the building work
